Foot Pain During Pregnancy

Foot pain is one of the most common discomforts of pregnancy. Custom orthotics provide safe, immediate relief for arch and heel pain — and often improve knee, hip, and back pain too.

Why Pregnancy Causes Foot Pain

Foot pain is among the most common physical complaints women experience during pregnancy — yet it is also one of the most undertreated, because many women assume it is simply something to endure. It doesn't have to be.

Two key physiological changes during pregnancy conspire to cause foot pain:

  • Hormonal changes — the same hormones (particularly relaxin) that loosen the ligaments of the pelvis to allow for delivery also act on the ligaments throughout the body, including the feet. As the foot ligaments relax, the arch begins to flatten.
  • Weight gain — as body weight increases during pregnancy, the flattening feet must bear a significantly greater load, causing the arch to strain and spread further.

The result is increased stress on the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon, and all of the joints of the foot and ankle. This can cause arch pain, heel pain, ankle swelling, and an increase in foot size — sometimes by a full shoe size or more.

How Orthotics Help

Custom-made orthotics — supportive inserts fabricated specifically for your feet — provide the structural support that the softened ligaments can no longer deliver. They hold the arch in its proper position, redistribute weight evenly across the foot, and dramatically reduce strain on overworked structures.

The relief from orthotics is often immediate. Many patients walk out of our office after being fitted feeling dramatically better than they did walking in.

In addition to foot pain, orthotics frequently alleviate knee, hip, and back pain during pregnancy that arises from the biomechanical imbalance caused by flattening feet. The foot is the foundation — when it is properly supported, the entire kinetic chain from foot to spine benefits.

Obstetrician-Recommended

Many obstetricians regularly refer their pregnant patients to us for orthotic fitting. If you are experiencing foot, knee, hip, or low back pain during your pregnancy, ask your OB whether a podiatric evaluation might help — or simply call us directly.

Are Orthotics Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes. Custom foot orthotics are entirely non-invasive and have no systemic effects. They require no medication, no procedures, and no recovery time. They simply fit into your existing shoes and go to work immediately.

Additional Relief Strategies

  • Supportive footwear — wear shoes with firm arch support and cushioned soles; avoid prolonged time in flat shoes, flip-flops, or high heels
  • Elevation — elevating the feet when at rest reduces ankle swelling
  • Compression socks — gentle graduated compression helps manage swelling in the feet and ankles
  • Ice therapy — 15 minutes of ice on sore arches or heels provides anti-inflammatory relief
  • Gentle stretching — calf stretches and plantar fascia stretches help maintain flexibility
  • Activity modification — reducing prolonged standing on hard surfaces helps during periods of peak discomfort

Orthotics: Part of Every Pregnancy

Dr. Ross recommends that orthotics become a part of every woman's pregnancy in order to avoid arch strain and prevent permanent increase in foot size. The foot changes of pregnancy don't always reverse fully after delivery — but with proper support, arch spreading and ligament overstretching can be minimized.
